All belt tests are very similar. The differences are in the complexity of your movements and the skills that you are asked to display for each rank.
You will have to demonstrate basic movements that are required for each belt. These movements are randomly selected by the instructor giving the test. You can be asked to perform any combination of kicks, punches or blocks that would be indicative of your current rank.
You will have to show the instructor giving the test your pattern which is listed in the chart below. The instructor can also ask you to show him/her any pattern you have learned in the past.
You will have to show the instructor either one-step or three-step sparring as indicated on the chart below. In addition, you can be asked to demonstrate any previous technique from this category.
Self-defense that is indicative of your belt level must also be demonstrated. As you progress in rank you will be asked to perform more numerous and complex techniques.
You will have to break a board (about ½ inch thick pine). The breaks for each rank are shown in the chart. Be aware that breaks are subject to change at the instructor's discression.
Everyone testing for 7th Grade Gold Belt and above will demonstrate free-sparring. As you progress in rank you will be asked to spar more opponents back-to-back and possibly more than 1 opponent at the same time.
After demonstrating physical techniques, each student is asked some questions. These questions can be taken from anything that is listed in the Rules and Terminology Sheets on this website. In addition, students can be asked to reflect on why they have decided to train in Tae Kwon Do.
Everyone starts as a 9th Grade White Belt.
