You are here: The Alternative Canon > Introduction

This is the Alternative Canon, hopefully the coolest annotated bibliography around. These pages contain not only a listing of plays that meet our criteria, but also the beginnings of discussion about these plays, written by members of ACTR, particularly the dramaturgy officers. These are the features of the Alternative Canon:

  • An alphabetical listing of plays by title.
  • An alphabetical listing of authors, plus as much biographical/critical information about those authors as we can scrounge up.
  • A listing of plays by prominent themes in those plays, sort of an informal Library of Congress style organization.
  • A listing of plays by the location in which they take place (sometimes this matters, sometimes it doesn't).
  • Some random pages of history and trivia about authors and also larger issues, which may help you appreciate some of these plays. They might just be fun, too.
  • Some notes about the people who contributed to the writing of the canon. These contributions are sort of like written discussion, after all, so brief notes about us may be the grain of salt you need.

With each entry for a play, you can expect to find complete bibliographic-type information for that play, the people to contact if you'd like to produce it (if known), and at least two written interpretations of/reactions to that play.

No matter what we end up doing, the Alternative Canon will never be comprehensive, although we hope it will nonetheless be useful and interesting. This resource is constantly changing and growing, particularly here in our first year. Thank you, and enjoy!
