Where: Ashland,
WI
What: Book Across the
Bay, a 10km ski / snowshoe race across the Chequamegon Bay of Lake
Superior
When: 7th
weekend
Winter Term 2006 (and 2005, and 2004)
Leaders: Mark Dyson +
Helen Behr
Notes:
45+ people came on this trip. 9 vehicles: 1 campus van, seven personal
cars, 1 cargo van to haul cargo like skis and snowshoes.
Left Saturday morning at 10am, 1 hour drive to REI to rent skis for
those that couldn't get them from the Rec Center. Then to Tobies along
Hwy 35 for lunch (in the parking lot out of the back of a van. It was
cold).
We drove to Ashland, dropped everyone off (~3:45 pm), then drivers
drove to Washburn (the end of the race) to drop off the cars and took
the shuttle back to the race start (but this went poorly; people were
late to the start). In the future, we should drop the cars off first at
Washburn, and then everyone should take the shuttle to the race start.
That would work way better.
Post-race (started at 6, all students were done by 9 or so), ate lots
of (free) chili in the awards / party tent at the end, then drove to
Northland College where we had arranged to spend the night on the floor
of dorms. This arrangement was done by email with personal contacts,
and we brought our hosts gifts to offset the imposition of 45 smelly
Carleton kids on their floor.
We left at 8 the next morning, some cars got back for brunch, some
didn't.
