Where:  Cannon River
What: Canoeing
When: 9th weekend Spring Term 2005
Leaders: Mark Dyson
Notes:

Left about 10am on Saturday morning with 10 people. Lunch on Lake Byllesby. Portaged around dam, then a canoe tipped and we lost some paddles and some shoes, but nobody's hurt.

Camped at Hidden Valley Campground in Welch, MN. Apparently they now don't allow anyone to camp unless every member of the group is 21, but this wasn't a problem for us. Other times this trip has been run, CANOE groups have just pitched a tent on the side of the river on public land. The campsite was nice, but not quite "outdoorsy" as we were sharing it with vacationing locals drinking lots of light domestic beer in recognition of Memorial Day. Not the best place to camp 9th weekend...

Got up on Sunday and paddled to Red Wing in about 4 hours. The river was fast. The Mississippi is fun to canoe on because of the huge boats that go by and cause huge waves. We were picked up by a campus van and a student car with the canoe trailer and got back to Carleton by 3:30.
