The Carleton College Chess Club was re-established in 1997 by Ben Hron
'00. Since 1997 we've been growing by a couple members each
year. The Carleton Winter Open has been an annual event on campus
since 1998.
1998-1999
The '99 Open featured a 12 person turn out. It was won by Ben Hron
with a perfect score. The top four unrated participants each won a
year long, USCF
membership. They were Stuart Gorman '00, Alex Wong '01, Andy
Wixon '02, and Henry Brock '02.
1999-2000
The third annual Carleton Winter Open ('00)
was a smashing success. We had 16 players turn out for the event,
which was won by Andy Lee '03 with a 4-0 score. 2nd-4th were Jon
Lansing '01, Eli Morris '03, and Peter Newhall '03. These players
each received a year long membership to the USCF.
We took two teams to the U.S.
Amateur Team (Mid-West) in Chicago.
The Carleton A team tied for second overall and also took home the Top
Collegiate Team trophy. The Carleton B team placed second among
collegiate teams. First board, Andy Lee drew with IM Angelo Young and
third board Eli Morris went undefeated.

2000-2001
While this was a rather slow year for the chess club, we did manage to make
it out to Chicago for the U.S.
Amateur Team (Mid-West) during Winter term. There the B team took home a
trophy and 4 clocks for being the team with the best score and an average
rating under 1400. We also headed up to the St. Paul Castle Chess Club to
play a 9 round blitz chess tournament in the spring. There Bryan Gast '03
tied IM Victor Adler for first place with 7.5 points out of 9, Andy Lee '03
came in third with 5.5, and Taylor Curtis '04 got a prize for highest score
of the players with ratings under 1600.
The Carleton Winter Open ('01) went off without a hitch as Andy Lee '03 won
again with a score of 4-0. Eli Morris '03, Peter Newhall '03, and Taylor
Curtis '04 came in second, and tied for third respectively.
2004-2007
