The Carleton Chess Team 2000-2001

And their performance at the U.S. Amateur Team Tournament (Midwest)

The A Team

First Board: Andy Lee '03

Rating: 2163

Tournament summary: Played solidly throughout, though he lost a 120-move match to Aleksandar Stamnov (2315) in the second round. He said, "I got educated in minor piece end games, the hard way."

Second Board: Bryan Gast '03

Rating: 2054

Tournament summary: Got a little toasted, but had some good wins as well. Tough matches all around.

Third Board: Eli Morris '03

Rating: 1884

Tournament summary: Missed a critical win at one point, but tore it up otherwise.

Fourth Board: Peter Newhall '03

Rating: 1584

Tournament summary: Went throughout without a loss, but took a dubious draw at one point. "Andy, is it okay if I offer a draw?" "Well...I won't hate you for it."

The B Team

First Board: Taylor Curtis '04

Rating: 1504

Tournament summary: Had a hard tournament in which he played up a lot (mostly 1700s and such). He did managed to pull off a miraculous win in the fifth round a game with incredibly double-edged play.

Second Board: John Lansing '01

Rating: 1393

Tournament summary: John played incredibly well considering his only loss was to a 2200. Truly, a strong performance.

Third Board: Brendan Foote '04

Rating: 927

Tournament summary: Having the huge advantage of being underrated by almost a thousand points, Brendan didn't find much competition except for the one expert he played and beat (rated 2014).

Fourth Board: Paul Morsbach

Rating: unrated

Tournament summary: Paul had to play as black for all four of his games, and was outrated for every one of them, too.

Alternate: Brendon Stanton

Rating: unrated

Tournament summary: Brendan also found himself outclassed. At one time he was playing an "unrated" who had previously been 1950!
