Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan, founded on November 9, 1945 by Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee is a traditional Korean martial art with deep-rooted and rich traditions. Like many other martial arts, Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan is based on ancient techniques documented by ancient practitioners of various martial arts. The Soo Bahk Do style is related to the ancient fighting arts of Korea, including Soo Bahk Ki, Tae Kyun, and others.
Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan lessons are open to any interested student or staff member at Carleton. There are no fees for the class itself, although students who wish to continue training for more than one term may incur some expenses in purchasing a uniform and testing fees. If you do wish to train in Soo Bahk Do but feel that you may be unable to afford it, please contact Reid Gilman, 2009.
There will be two Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan classes per week, both taught by a senior student who has received the permission of his or her instructor. Occasionaly, there may be visits to dojang (studios) in the Twin Cities to train, and test, under master instructors.
Hwang Kee, in his book Soo Bahk Do Tang Soo Do, Volume 1 relates his discovery of the Moo Yei Do Bo Tong Ji, or military arts manual which gave him the basis for many of the techniques that later became Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan.
