In the martial arts, and Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan especially, one's "lineage" is important. A martial lineage has nothing to do with family, but instead it shows under whom a practitioner trained, and, in turn, what style of techniques he or she learned. At Carleton, our lineage in Soo Bahk Do can be traced directly back to Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee, as is at all Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan schools.
A great deal of attention is paid to the Dan Bon, or Dan Number, in Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. More than just an identification number, the Dan Bon reflects a practitioner's rank and identifies him or her as a member of the international Moo Duk Kwan. All legitimate Dan members in the world-wide Moo Duk Kwan possess a Dan Bon.
Kwan Jang Nim - a Korean term meaning "grandmaster." There is only grandmaster of the Moo Duk Kwan at any given time. It is the highest rank within the organization.
Sa Bom Nim - a Korean term meaning "master instructor." Most studio owners hold this certification. All Sa Bom Nim's have been awarded at least the rank of 4th Dan and are at least 30 years old.
Kyo Sa Nim - a Korean term meaning "instructor." Studio owners who have not yet met the age or rank requirments for Sa Bom certification but who are least 21 years old and have attained the rank of 2nd Dan may test for this certification.
Jo Kyo Nim - a Korean term for "instructor's assistant." Students who have not met the age or rank requirements for Kyo Sa may test for this certification.
Dan Bon - a Korean term meaning "Dan number." "Dan" is often translated to mean "level" - as in "2nd Dan," or "Second Level." Dan rank in Soo Bahk Do is considered to be equivalent to black-belt rank in most other martial arts. For philosophical reasons, Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan does not award black-belt rank to any of its practitioners.
