2004

Greetings friends of the Moustache!

It is indeed an honor to before such a splendid sea of moustaches on this night, the culmination of our growing season. Tonight we gather to reflect and celebrate. Now that our moustaches are full and blooming like tropical flowers upon our humble, often arid, upper lips we may not remember the struggle that many endured to get to this point. In my conversations with other club members I have heard repeated complaints of the hardships faced by many growers. Often times these trials were induced by fellow Carls! However, you need fear no longer. For tonight we can reflect on the hardships endured and realize that now they were not in vain because you, my friends, contributed to growing the good growth at Carleton.

Indeed, is this not a reason to celebrate? Tonight can we not say that we have moustaches and are proud of them? This year, in the spirit of so many of our moustachioed forefathers, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we have worked hard to prove that moustaches are a force of good in the world. By volunteering at the Faribault Humane Society we showed abandoned animals that someone cares for them: The moustache cares for them. By reading to the youth of Northfield we have shown the future generation that they need have no fear of the moustache. By chaperoning at the Middle School’s Saturday Night Live we showed them that they need not grow up in a world where moustaches are “uncool” or “not so hip”: Moustaches are to be accepted and embraced. And, by selling buttons to raise money for the women’s safe center, we are sending the message that the moustache cares for women!

Although these activities are local, in this age of globalization there are still more moustaches around the world than golden arches. By growing the good growth here in Northfield, we are able to make a positive difference that has the chance of spreading the world over! Indeed, do not be surprised if you see moustaches becoming increasingly proactive around campus and around the globe. However, these are all things that need not concern us at this juncture. For now we can sit and enjoy the twilight of the Moustache Club’s growing season. For now we can rest assured that the state of the moustache is STRONG!

Thank you for your time and thank you for growing the good growth!!
