Report on CUT 1, March 3, 1999

Congratulations to the Quincy duo of Brian Ulrich and Subash Maddipoti for winning the First Annual(?) Carleton Undergraduate Tournament Saturday in Northfield, MN!

The tournament was limited to undergrads, and, in an attempt to match the field to the novice-level NAQT questions being used, allowed three or four person teams only of novice players, or from schools not invited to last year's NAQT ICT. Schools that were invited to last year's NAQT ICT were allowed to play non-novice undergrads only as part of two person teams. Undergrads who had themselves scored an average of 2.5 tossups or more per game at a previous NAQT ICT were required to play solo.

The 22 team field was first split into two divisions which each played full round robins, with results as follows:

PEANUT BUTTER DIVISION:
1. Marquette, 9-1, 3340 pts.
2. Carleton Woodhouse, 8-2, 3485 pts.
3. Illinois Johann Head, 8-2, 3445 pts.
4. Iowa Duo, 8-2, 2545 pts.
5. Minnesota Dan, 6-4, 2480 pts.
6. Macalester, 5-5, 2495 pts.
7. Carleton Elliott, 5-5, 1905 pts.
8. St. Olaf Bacchnal, 3-7, 1750 pts.
9. Iowa State Duo, 2-8, 1445 pts.
10. Quincy Autobots, 1-9, 1390 pts.
11. Buena Vista B, 0-10, 690 pts.

JELLY DIVISION:
1. Quincy Decepticons, 9-1, 3105 pts.
2. Carleton Dashwood, 8-2, 2920 pts.
3. Carleton Bennet, 7-2-1, 3340 pts.
4. Illinois Herbert Kornfeld, 7-3, 2850 pts.
5. St. Olaf Oprichnina, 6-3-1, 2520 pts.
6. Minnesota Quartet, 5-5, 2690 pts.
7. Wisconsin, 4-6, 2305 pts.
8. Iowa State Josh, 4-6, 1620 pts.
9. Buena Vista A, 3-7, 1795 pts.
10. Iowa Trio, 1-9, 1030 pts.
11. Eureka, 0-10, 480 pts.

(As you see, ties were possible)

The top three from each division (with total points as a tiebreaker) were then grouped into the Gold Circle for a 5 game secondary round robin. The next three from each division were grouped into the Silver Circle to also play a circle round robin. And the bottom five from each division formed a Bronze Circle, which gave each team five more games against the teams from the other division. In the Gold and Silver Circles, teams had two rounds which were rematches against teams from their original division. For purposes of final record, these two games were treated as one single game, of double length, with the winner being the team scoring the most points overall. (This was done to minimize the effects of initial divisional placement.)

Final standings were as follows:

GOLD CIRCLE
1. Quincy Decepticons, 12-1, 4460 pts.
2. Illinois Johann Head, 10-3, 4940 pts.
3. Carleton Bennet, 9-3-1 4910 pts.
4. Carleton Woodhouse, 9-4, 5025 pts.
5. Marquette, 9-4, 5005 pts.
6. Carleton Dashwood, 9-4, 4070 pts.

SILVER CIRCLE
7. Iowa Duo, 10-3, 4105 pts.
8. Illinois Herbert Kornfeld, 9-4, 4285 pts.
9. Minnesota Dan, 8-5, 3930 pts.
10. Minnesota Quartet, 7-7, 3930 pts.
11. St. Olaf Oprichnina, 6-6-1, 3730 pts.
12. Macalester, 6-7, 3780 pts.

BRONZE CIRCLE
13. Wisconsin, 9-6, 4185 pts.
14. Carleton Elliott, 9-6 , 3270 pts.

21. Eureka , 1-14, 895 pts.
22. Buena Vista B, 0-15, 1225 pts.

It was great to see several teams not usually regulars on the quizbowl circuit at this event. The Macalester team was attending their first collegiate tournament of any sort, forming for the first time for this event. Usually that is a recipe for a rocky introduction to the game, but Macalester proved very competitive indeed, and I hope we'll see them at future events as well. The Marquette team is new to the circuit-beyond-CBI as of last month (attending NAQT sectionals and ACF Regionals before this), and said that they are planning to participate on the circuit all year long next year -- great! They are good too, playing as a trio at this tournament, and finishing 2nd in total points scored.

Other miscellaneous notes: Four of the teams were one person only: Carleton Woodhouse (Emily Pike), Minnesota Dan (Dan Lee), St. Olaf Oprichnina (Adam Malamen), and Iowa State Josh (Josh Kortbein). Trophies were awarded to the top three teams. Among those, Quincy was, as noted, the duo of Brian and Subash; Illinois Johann Head was the duo of Mike Angel and Jerry Hagen; Carleton Bennet was an all-frosh foursome of Brian Droitcour, Andrew Eppig, Shane Ewert, and Gabe Lyon. Shane's twin brother Adam was part of the Macalester team. My thanks to all who came, some through some stretches of bad winter weather, and thanks to all the volunteers that helped the event to run.
