Report on CUT 4, March 2, 2002


CUT 4, the fourth annual Carleton Undergraduate Tournament, was held on Saturday, March 2, 2002. For this tournament using NAQT novice-level questions, various criteria were used to limit certain schools/players to competing as one or two-person teams, while novices and some others were allowed to compete as foursomes.

Our champion, who went 13-3 on the day, was Carleton Yuan, consisting of Brant Beyer and Chris Idemmili. In the finals they defeated Iowa State "Walter, what's a pederass?", consisting of Mickey TeKippe and Matt Cvijanovich. Third place, the final trophy position, went to Carleton Chou, consisting of Gabe Lyon.

Single elimination playoffs for eight teams were preceded by round robins in two fourteen-team divisions, with these results:

This tournament saw the circuit debut of a brand new team, Drake University, which was playing in its first intercollegiate quizbowl competition of any sort, ever, so far as their team knows. Now that they have their first quizbowl victory behind them (a win over a Grinnell squad), we hope to see them at future circuit events.
