General Information

"Academic Quiz Competition," or "Quiz Bowl," are generic names referring to a number of similar, but not necessarily identical, question and answer game formats, most commonly involving competition using lock-out buzzer systems, between two teams, typically of four players each, who score points by answering general knowledge questions in a series of "individual-tossup followed by team-bonus" sequences. "College Bowl," a trademarked name of the College Bowl Company, Inc., originated the general format on radio and TV decades ago.

Opportunities exist at Carleton College for students to participate in academic quiz competitions on two levels--the intramural tournament or campus championship, held each fall, and intercollegiate competition by the varsity Academic Quiz Team throughout the rest of the year. (Go to the section Getting Involved at Carleton for further information on either level.)

Questions relating to academic quiz competition at Carleton should be directed either to Eric Hillemann, the College Archivist, who directs the campus IM tournament and coaches the intercollegiate team, or to any of the team's three officers for 2009/10: Andreas Stoehr, Austin Bell, or Carsten Gehring.
