Fall Intramural Tournament
Some IM Tournament History
Much of the pre-1990s IM quizbowl tournament history at Carleton has become murky. If anyone seeing this can
correct or add to any of our information, please let Eric
Hillemann know!
Since 1990 the almost-annual series between all-star teams of students from the IM tournament and a
faculty/staff team now stands at 11 wins for the students and 5 wins for the faculty/staff.
Since 1999 we have also sometimes played in the spring a series of matches pitting faculty/staff teams
against that year's student varsity "A" team in toto. That series now stands at 4 wins for the
students and 1 wins for the faculty/staff.

From 1980 through 1992, campus College Bowl tournaments were held in the Spring, during Parents Weekend.
Our information regarding many pre-1991 tournaments is spotty, and for some we know nothing at all. Maybe
we'll find some alumni who can fill in some of what we're missing.
Spring 1992: The tournament was something of a bust -- with the varsity team not playing, only two other
teams signed up, and so the "tournament" consisted only of a best two of three game playoff. In the evening
exhibition, the Faculty/Staff All Stars defeated the student champions, and were then themselves defeated by
the varsity team, 2 games to 1. The varsity team won Game 3 by scoring 30 points on the final tossup and
bonus question to win by 5 points.
Spring 1991: The varsity team ran the tournament, and did not play. Tournament champions were the team
of Josh Luftig, Paul Duckenfield, Emily Taggart, and Jeff Erickson. Runners-up were the team of Zach
Perlman, Jay Colond, Marcus Campbell, and David Hunstad. The Faculty/Staff All Stars defeated the student
champions, and then were themselves defeated by the varsity team.
Spring 1987: the winning team probably included Tom Schmidt '87, because in 1993 he sent back to us a
metal watering can labelled "The Carleton College Bowl Challenge Cup," telling us that it used to be given
to the winners of the campus tournament, and he'd had it ever since 1987. We have not thought it best to
return the Challenge Cup to its former use, but the thing is on display in the College Archives, along with
other trophies and plaques won by Carleton's intercollegiate quiz teams.
Spring 1986: 29 teams played, and the winning team was "Abu Nidal's Waterbed Warehouse," consisting of
Phil Zrimsek, Duane Butcher, Mike Stone, Steve Shulman, and John Soave.
Spring 1985: 40 teams registered, "breaking the previous record of 26." (We have not approached such
numbers ever since. Since the 1980s the number of teams participating has usually been in the teens at
best.)
Spring 1984: The all-senior winning team was "Candles in the Wind," consisting of captain Mark Guttag,
Chuck Wojciechowski, Sarah Lucken, and Jim Reichert. Guttag amplified for us: "In 1984, the IM tournament
was double elimination with about 20 or so teams and we won the winner's bracket. We then faced The Walking
Zombies (or possibly, Helen and the Walking Zombies), the team that won the loser's bracket. The Walking
Zombies then beat us in the first game, giving both our team's one loss and forcing a final winner take all
game which we won. I believe the Walking Zombies included the following people: Guy Glirbas '85 (my
roommate at the time, so I know he was on the team), Thomas McCudden '85, Helen Erwin '85 and Molley McManus
'86."
Spring 1983: Mark Guttag writes: "In 1983 the faculty participated in the tournament, I believe as
just a regular team, and won the tournament."
Spring 1982: Mark Guttag writes: "I believe that Jack Ungerleider's team, Much Ado About Nothing, won
the 1982 tournament, or possibly lost to a faculty team in the finals. I believe that Jack's team that year
was the same 4 people you have on his team when they were runners-up in 1981."
Spring 1981: A Carletonian article tells us that the tournament champions were the team of Shawn Brooks,
Eugene Geddes, Greg Gordon, Don Leighton, and Jeremy Teitelbaum. Runners-up were the team of Paul Iverson,
Leonard Lee, Kate McKinnon, Brock Stevens, and Jack Ungerleider. 21 teams competed.
Spring 1980: 16 teams registered; the names of the winners are not known to us.
Before 1980 there was no tradition of such organized quiz team activity at Carleton. The only traces of such
activity that we have been able to find are two articles from old Carletonians. In 1966 the 'Tonian
discussed planning for College Bowl at Carleton, primarily to have an intercollegiate match with St. Olaf,
which had recently had a successful campus tournament. We don't know whether or not anything actually ever
came of this. In November of 1947 six students and six faculty vied in a Co-op sponsored version of the show
"Information Please," with President Larry Gould moderating. Questions for the show were submitted in
advance by other members of the college community.
