About the International Relations Council at Carleton

The Carleton College International Relations Council (IRC) seeks to initiate and encourage awareness of pertinent issues in international politics, science/health, economics, and culture through on-campus forums/seminars, film screenings, and debate. A component of our organization is Model UN, an academic team of 40+ Carleton students who attend national and international conferences as delegates representing countries on a variety of UN organs and committees.

Who we are:

The IRC at Carleton is a group of students who each year collect to explore the realm of contemporary international issues. We usually come from diverse backgrounds and majors and share an interest in the workings of national and international institutions that move our world forward.

We are student-initiated and student-led. The IRC invites all Carleton students regardless of experience or class year to any of its events throughout the year. If you have ideas or suggestions for IRC programming, we encourage you to contact an officer or attend one of our meetings.

What we do:

The programs the IRC sponsors are intended to engage the student body in relevant and current international issues as well as prepare its members for continued involvement in international relations after leaving Carleton. We focus our efforts on two main avenues: on-campus events and Model United Nations (MUN).

On-campus events can take many forms. Past discussions have focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the role of America in the post-Cold War era. In the Spring of 2007, we hosted an Eyes on Africa forum involving a full day of panels, speakers, and awareness-raising activities. We are looking forward to dramatically expanding this branch of our operations during the 2008-2009 Academic year and invite your participation!

The program on which the IRC spends much of its time and energy is the Carleton Model United Nations team. Each year, the IRC sponsors on-campus practice simulations and sends several delegations to premier national and international conferences. Carleton has developed an international reputation at these conferences, and we look forward to continuing this tradition in year to come. Whether you've participated in Model UN before or have never heard of it, we encourage you to visit our website and submit an application!
